하드 락의 전성기인 70년대를 호령한 수많은 밴드들 중 빅4을 꼽으라면 누굴 지목하시겠습니까? 제 생각이 아니라 이 부분은 이미 거의 정설이 되어 있더군요. Black Sabbath와 Red Zeppelin, Deep Purple 그리고 나머지 하나가 오늘 소개드릴 Uriah Heep 입니다.

유라이어 힙은 7월 1일이면 매년 FM을 통해 만날 수 있습니다. 이곡 'July Mornning'은 유라이어 힙을 유럽이 아니라 세계의 밴드로 도약시킨 곡입니다. 대중성을 떠나 음악 자체도 헤비 메탈과 아트락을 적절히 융합시킨 보기 드문 수작으로 꼽히지요.

하지만 저는 이 밴드의 단 한곡만 선택하라면 주저치 않고 Lady in Black을 꼽을 겁니다. 각자의 취향이 다르겠지만, 제가 생각하는 좋은 곡의 조건은 듣는 이를 깊숙히 끌어 당기는 흡인력과 감동이거든요. 들어보면 아시겠지만, 레이디 인 블렉의 단순한 몇 소절의 반복이 만들어내는 흡인력은 거의 절정의 수준입니다. David Byron(보컬)과 Ken Hensley(키보드)가 acoustic 기타와 둔탁한 드럼에 맞춰 토해내는 후렴구의 화음 또한 쉽사리 헤어날 수 없는 감동으로 다가옵니다.

사실 제가 더 놀란 건 바로 Lady in Black의 가사인데요. '아~ 노랫말을 이렇게도 쓸 수 있구나' 하는 감탄이 절로 나올 정도로 기가 막힙니다. 도입부는 이렇게 시작되죠.

어느날 아침,
어느 외로운 휴일날 아침
그녀는 내게로 왔어.
한겨울 바람에 긴 머리를 휘날리며..
어떻게 날 찾았는지는 나도 몰라
난 그냥 어둠 속을 걷고 있었거든
온갖 파멸에 둘러싸인 채
이길 수 없는 싸움에서 도망치듯..       
아 아~~

Uriah Heep은 1970년 영국 런던에서 결성된 그룹입니다. 첫 앨범은 반응이 싸늘했지만, 두번째 앨범 'Salisbury'에 수록된 Lady in Black이 독일에서 선풍적인 인기를 끕니다. 이 한 곡으로 이들은 유럽을 평정하기 시작했는데, 당시 맴버는 David Byron(보컬), Mick Box(기타), Paul Newton(베이스), Ken Hensley(키보드), Keith Baker(드럼). 같은 해(71년)에 나온 3집 앨범 'Look at Yourself'에 그 유명한 July Mornning이 들어 있고, 4집 'The Magician's Birthday'엔 친숙한 Rain과 Sunrise가 들어 있습니다.
