드디어 퀸이군요. 퀸은 저 뿐만 아니라 많은 한국인들이 좋아하는 그룹입니다. 어느 방송국에서 신청곡 위주로 조사를 했더니 비틀즈, ABBA에 이어 퀸이 '한국인이 좋아하는 팝 아티스트' 3위에 올랐다더군요. 마이클 잭슨, 엘튼 존, 이글스 같은 전설들을 뒤에 세웠으니 정말 대단하지 않나요?

그런데 의외로 '좋아하는 팝송'에서는 퀸의 곡들은 훨씬 뒷 순위로 밀립니다. Love of My Life와 Bohemian Rhapsody가 겨우 50위 내에 포함될 정도니까요. 왜 그럴까를 생각하다 보니 저마저도 '퀸의 어떤 곡을 특별히 좋아했더라?' 에서 답이 뚜렷하지가 않더라는 겁니다. 그건 아마 좋아하는 곡이 없어서가 아니라 좋아하는 곡이 너무 많은 까닭일 겁니다.

4명의 맴버가 1971년부터 Freddie Mercury(보컬, 피아노)가 사망한 1991년까지, 20년을 함께 한 것도 정말 대단합니다. Brian May(기타), John Deacon(베이스), Roger Tayler(드럼)가 그들인데, 프레디의 그늘에 가려 제대로 평가받지 못한 부분이 분명 있을 것임에도 이들은 늘 스포트라이트를 프레디 쪽으로 돌렸죠. 바로 그 프레디는 1991년 11월 24일 에이즈 합병증으로 인한 폐렴으로 팬들의 곁을 떠납니다.
 
오늘 소개드릴 Bohemian Rhapsody는 세상이 퀸을 퀸으로 인정하게 만든 결정적인 곡입니다. 75년 11월에 발매된 4집 앨범 'A Night at the Opera'에 들어 있는데, 이 곡은 나오자마자 센세이션을 일으키며 UK차트 1위에 오릅니다. 퀸이 미국으로 진출하는 계기가 된 곡이고, 이후 프레디가 사망한 1991년에도 이 노래는 다시 한번 UK 싱글차트 1위를 차지합니다.

내용은 무척 슬프고 무겁습니다. 사람을 죽이고 사형을 앞둔 소년의 독백이 주내용이거든요. '삶은 이제 막 시작됐는데, 그걸 한꺼번에 내팽개친 절망적인 상황'을 노래하고 있죠. 역설적이게도 이 노래는 얼마전 영국의 한 설문조사에서 최고의 힐링송으로 뽑혔다는군요.

1980년에 발표한 8집 앨범 'The Game'에 들어 있는 'Crazy little thing called love'도 함께 소개합니다. 프레디의 기름진 목소리를 제대로 느낄 수 있는 곡입니다.
